CHAPTER 10

AS I LIVE AND BREATHE

Rygon luxuriated in a plush chair relishing the screams and moans of outworlders being tortured. The holographic image of an assault cruiser commander blinked on.

“Assault cruiser 2 to Rygon.”

“Speak,” Rygon permitted.

“Your Eminence, one of our scientists has smuggled the nonconformist called Gage into the spatial anomaly.”

“What?!” Rygon snapped, leaping to his feet. “And who allowed that?!” He threw his drink, made from some of his captors, across the room. The chalice shattered.

“You let them escape?!” He jabbed an accusing finger at the hologram.

“We didn't let them,” the commander said. They just escaped despite our best efforts.”

“Efforts,” Rygon growled. He then paced around. “Now, Commander, you know that we've been friends for sometime.”

“C-c-certainly, sir,” the commander stuttered.

“So it grieves me to do this. Put your first lieutenant on, now, and let's resolve this.”

Horror swept over the commander's face as he stepped aside. His first lieutenant's image replace him. “Your Luminescence?”

“Eject your commander from the nearest air lock,” Rygon nonchalantly ordered with a dismissive wave of his hand. “I'm replacing him with you.”

“Sir?” The lieutenant asked. Fear changed the tone of his voice and his facial expression.

“You heard me, Lieutenant!”

“Your Greatness, I even helped kill those freedom fighters hiding on Xar!” the commander pleaded, his voice wracked with panic. Nevertheless, the bridge's security guards strode up dutifully and dragged the screaming commander off the bridge.

“Congratulations on your new promotion,” Rygon said. “And don't fail me!”

Rygon stormed out of the chamber and made his way to Mardona's bed chamber. She lay in bed as he entered. He sat at the side of the bed.

“Are you ready to tell me a bedtime story, Rygon?” he asked.

“I am,” she said. “All right. Many cycles ago, when I was a child, Rygon Prime was known as Allayus. A completely backward world as I would come to understand. I came home to hear my mother shrieking. I stopped and listened. I inched in the direction of the screaming. A five-jawed male was attacking her. He grabbed her, and she struck him. He throws her against a wall as she screamed again. The male turned and glared at me. Mother stopped and looked at me. Then, he backhanded her.

“'What do you want?!' he demanded of me. “Get out or you'll get the same!' I never understood what Mother saw in him, but he actually thought he could come into our home and kick us around. She told him to leave me alone, but I stood my ground, scowling at Five Jaws.” Rygon scoffed.

“ I took a step toward him after pulling a knife out of a kitchen drawer. It was at that moment my life would change. I rushed him. Mother's gasps still reach out to me from that day as I stabbed the five-jawed male repeatedly.” Rygon became more animated and made repeated stabbing motions.

“All five of those monstrous jaws snapped open in shock as Mother's suitor stumbled to the ground. I can still see his thick, deep yellow blood staining the floor.
